Work on building the 'BETA' version of gofromhere.com began in early August 2004 at some thirty eight thousand feet above the North Atlantic Ocean as the sites creator, Simon Jones, flew to America.
From
his room in Hotel71 in
Chicago, with spectacular views of city behind him, Simon continued
work on the site to get the early BETA version completed
and online as quickly as possible. Within two days the site was ready
for 'soft launch' enabling Simon to get back to actually get back to
enjoying his vacation in the USA.
While the name was fresh, the multi search engine concept was nothing new to Simon. Earlier in 2004 he sold a similar website that provided the inspiration and building blocks for gofromhere.com. With the seven years spent on that previous site, gofromhere.com already had a considerable experience to draw upon.
With
the BETA version of the site live and being extensively tested, Simon
enlisted the help of a fellow web designer, Michael
Koch, to radically re-engineer
the site. Michael himself was looking for such a project in order to
have a 'real world' example of how to convert a table based HTML site
into a modern CSS driven website for an article
he was writing.
Although Michael's version of the site didn't look all that different to the BETA, it had essentially be completely redesigned from top to bottom. This new version of the site was faster loading, more efficient and W3C standards compliant. Simon then took the new XHTML version of the site and continued its development.
Each of the sites twelve featured search engines were re-reviewed, and a whole raft of new links were added to the site. With the extensive updates complete the site was ready for its official launch in December 2004.
